Deep in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya holds the natural treasures left by the ancient Mayan civilizations; their spectacular Mayan ruins. Among these treasures are the Mayan ruins of Tulum, a fascinating site to explore. It is the only Mayan city located next to the Caribbean Sea and only one which is walled. Tulum was home to laborers, astrologers, farmers, and nobility.
There are three walls that protect the city. Archeologists believe the walls were built to protect the city from outsiders and to separate social classes. This exciting archeological site also contains several house-like structures, burial sites, a tall pyramid, and two structures on each corner of the wall which archeologists believe to have been guides for planting crops.
In addition to the archeological site, swimming and sunbathing is allowed at the beautiful, white sand beach just below the ruins. For the perfect vacation photograph, there are several places on the cliff above the sea with beautiful views. Just outside the Mayan ruins, there are many booths and shops that offer traditional Mexican handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as food and drink vendors. To fully appreciate Tulum, plan to explore the site for about three hours.
