Riviera Maya, Q. Roo (February 2012) In honor of World Wetlands Day a group of 28 elementary students were invited by ecotourism resort Hacienda Tres Rios Resort, Spa & Nature Park to learn about the importance of the ecosystems that contribute to nature preservation.
During their visit to the natural park, the students were greeted by Gabriel Santoyo, Director of Sustainable Development for Tres Rios, who warmly welcomed them and led them through an informative tour of the nursery, orchid garden, cenotes and an area of the beach where one of three rivers empties into the sea.
The children received information on the four types of mangroves in the region: white, black, red and buttonwood and they were shown the reforestation program that Hacienda Tres Rios runs to contribute to the conservation of the mangroves.
On arrival, the students and two teachers were welcomed in the hotel lobby with green juice. They were then given a participation pin, a hat and a camera so they could capture images of their visit and participate in the contest. The three best photos will be uploaded to the Hacienda Tres Rios Facebook page.
The public can then vote for their favorite picture in order to choose a winner, who will receive a complimentary stay at the resort. Second and third place will receive a day pass, giving them the opportunity to fully enjoy the natural park.
Finally, the group of students, accompanied by their two teachers, had a delicious lunch of fruit, sandwiches and juices. They left the resort with a certificate of participation, knowledge of the Riviera Maya flora and smiles on their faces.
